This page's purpose is to share lesson plans and lesson ideas used in my schools this year. Please feel free to download the lesson plan/outline. I understand it may not be in the form or format that your administrator prefers, but will list the tools, sites, and directions for using in your classroom. On a Mac running OS 10.8
To Setup Text to Speech - Go to System Preferences, then click on "Dictation and Speech" preference. Click the "Text to Speech" tab. Checkmark the choice, "Speak the selected text when the key is pressed". The key to use will be listed directly below. There is a CHANGE KEY button that will let you select a different key or combination. Be mindful if you change it. Try not to pick a frequently used key or combination of keys used for other programs.
To Use Text to Speech - Click and drag across text on the screen to highlight. Press the selected key(s) to have the Mac speak the text.
On an iPad
To Setup Text to Speech - Go to the Settings app. Tap GENERAL. Tap ACCESSIBILITY. Tap SPEAK SELECTION. Slide the switch beside "Speak Selection" to ON (green). For added emphasis on words, you can slide the switch beside "Highlight Words" to ON (green). It may also be necessary to slow or speed up the talking rate with the slider on this screen.
To Use Text to Speech - Touch and hold a finger on the word to highlight until a magnified bubble appears. Take the finger off the word. The SPEAK button will be beside COPY and DEFINE if text to speech has been setup on this device. The blue circles above on each end of the highlighted text can be touched and drug to expand the selection. Tap the SPEAK button.
